Miami was originally inhabited and occupied by the Native American Tequestas tribe for thousands of years, before the Spanish laid claim to it in the mid-1500s. A leading contributor to the high Spanish (particularly Cuban) influence that most associate with the city of Miami was Fidel Castro's rise to power in 1959. Since then, Cubans have emigrated in waves to southern Florida and Miami in particular. This has led to a deeply-rooted and well-loved Spanish heritage that permeates the city.

As the eighth most populous county in the United States, Miami has a big city feel, but with some distinctions. With its diverse roots and cultural heritage, the city is also known for high finance, entertainment, education, and even fashion.
